[Social Media Growth - June 2023] I started a new project!

Every year, I want to do something outside of my comfort zone and, this is it for 2023! Hope I won't regret it but I’m going to document it as I go along, for myself, and in case anyone’s interested. Now if I fail, you will know!

Background about me and my work process

  1. I’ve been creating content online for many years, I have a bank of content ready to post and I’m also very quick at coming up with something on the spot (Check out https://lovefulmind.com)

  2. I can use editing software proficiently

  3. I have a corporate job, so all of this is done at weekends, on my days off, early morning, and late evening during weekdays. I have no caring responsibilities other than my orange cat, so I do have free time

  4. I have an editorial planning doc I create to keep track of my ideas and content planned (I can share this at a later date if this proves to work well)

Why I want to grow my social media accounts

  • Share what I’ve learned (what I wished I’d been told when I was younger)

  • Build a community

  • Get better at storytelling

  • Build my independent personal brand

  • For fun!

Things I’ve learned so far

1. I’ve tested many different video formats: Texts on screen, POV, talking head, narration. Texts on screen and narration have worked the best.

2. Texts on screen worked well and took minimal time to make. One video got over 20K views on Instagram very quickly.

3. This type of video interestingly did the best on Instagram, followed by TikTok, and did not do well at all on Youtube.

4. Talking head videos performed the worst across the board. Probably just me still really bad at speaking.

5. However, VO/narration with visual illustrations seemed to do quite well. I plan to do more of them. Storytelling does rule.

6. I plan to try combining talking head and visual illustrations / green screen next. I haven’t done this yet because filming myself does take a lot of time (getting ready, positioning myself, etc) vs. recording VO

7. Youtube shorts worked a lot better than long form. One 10-second video could gain me a few new followers just like that. All my shorts have outperformed my recent horizontal videos.

8. A good strategy I’ve seen is to build an audience with shorts first, then slowly incorporate long form. I do love long form.

9. Instagram overall performs better than Tiktok and Youtube for me.

10. I’m a perfectionist so I really try to get over myself and just get things done and out there. It’s been working well so far.

11. Trending sounds helped.

12. If something works well once, don’t worry about it being repetitive - just make other videos about it.

13. This process has really shifted how I see other creators’ videos. I have become a lot more analytical.

14. One of the biggest challenges is to learn how to tell a story in minimal words necessary so you can capture attention but still share the messages you want. But I’m excited to master this one day!

15. You really have to love what you do. If not, it’s very easy to get disheartened and give up. Growing social media accounts is a tough job!

That’s it for now. Check back for my July update!
